Despite a 1-shoe finish, Ethiopian steeplechaser into final

Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi (R) shakes hands Australia's Genevieve Lacaze after they competed in the Women's 3000m Steeplechase Round 1 during the athletics event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 13, 2016.

Praught and two other runners in the physical race were sent toppling to the track in a series of collisions and ended up finishing far back in the pack.

Praught had fallen halfway through the race after Ethopia's Etenesh Diro last her shoe.

Ethiopia's Etenesh Diro is assisted by officials.

Diro had trouble jumping the obstacles, jumping off with her bare right foot to land on her left shoe.

Treacy had been running around ninth place, just off the back of the leading bunch, and eventually finished 12th place, 9:46.24, racing hard until the line. She'd thought she'd missed out.

Protests were filed by the Ethiopian, Irish and Jamaican teams following the race and, after reviewing the video, the Jury of Appeal advanced Diro, Sara Louise Treacy of Ireland and Aisha Praught of Jamaica to the final.

Diro was clipped from behind, but her shoe issue also caused a pile up of runners behind her, with Praught taking a tumble because of it. She resumed the race, stopped again to remove her sock as well, and then started chasing the leaders - with the crowd roaring her on.

"She stopped to put her shoe on directly in front of me", Praught told the Oregonian.

"I stood on a drainage grate on the inside of the track and fell completely".
