No Change in US Stance on Marijuana

Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug

"It's well past time for us to take marijuana off the federal government's list of outlawed drugs", Sanders wrote in a follow-up tweet August 11.

The DEA did announce one change.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration filed documents with the Federal Register on Thursday outlining its denial of petitions to reschedule marijuana.

"The measure that the DEA was considering supposedly would just be scheduling to Schedule Two, putting marijuana on a level with opium and cocaine, and methamphetamine, which are also on Schedule Two, and they couldn't even do that much", he lamented. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., and Cory Booker, D-N.J.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Thursday announced that it would not ease the classification of marijuana as a risky drug despite growing popular support for legalization across the country.

The federal agency in charge of arresting people for drugs says it won't reclassify marijuana as something that has medical uses.

Schedule I drugs are those considered the most unsafe with the potential for severe psychological or physical dependence.

Currently, the University of MS is the only institution authorized to grow the drug for use in medical studies.

The Food and Drug Administration did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

The Drug Enforcement Administration will not reclassify marijuana and remove it from the list of the most unsafe drugs.

Congressman Earl Blumenauer, along with Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have issued statements lambasting the decision of the DEA to keep marijuana a Schedule I substance, and they are all doing awesome work helping lead the way towards a sensible cannabis policy.

Four states - Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington - and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana, while another 12 have decriminalized its use. More than half the states have legalized the drug for either medicinal or recreational use.

"Keeping marijuana at Schedule I continues an outdated, failed approach-leaving patients and marijuana businesses trapped between state and federal laws", Blumenauer said.

The University of MS is now the only agency-registered cannabis supplier for research. But while the agency said it won't change marijuana's legal classification, it will try to make it easier for scientists to research cannabis.
