Pastor blames Milwaukee violence on lack of jobs

Authorities respond near a burning gas station as dozens of people protest following the fatal shooting of a man in Milwaukee Saturday Aug. 13 2016. A crowd of protesters skirmished with police Saturday night in the Milwaukee neighborhood where an offi

Walker announced the move after he said he received a request from the Milwaukee County Sheriff, David Clarke, and spoke to city mayor Tom Barrett.

The officer "ordered that individual to drop his gun", Mayor Tom Barrett said in a televised news conference.

At least four businesses were burned down and one police officer was hurt after violence broke out a few hours after the officer-involved shooting on August 13. Officers pulled over a "suspicious vehicle" on Saturday afternoon, according to Milwaukee's mayor, and two people fled the vehicle and ran in different directions.

Milwaukee was beset by protests and calls for police reform after an officer fatally shot Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill black man, in 2014. The protests happened on the city's predominantly black north side. A number of cars were also reportedly set on fire and three of the protesters were arrested.

Governor Walker meanwhile also praised citizens who helped to clean up the north-side neighborhood where the violence and protest took place. Almost 40 percent of Milwaukee's 600,000 residents are black, and heavily concentrated on the north side.

The trouble in Milwaukee started on Saturday afternoon.

Protesters set a police vehicle ablaze and fires broke out at gas station, an auto parts store and at least three other businesses, officials and local media reported.

The statement did not say whether the man fired any shots or pointed the weapon at officers.

Walker called for calm after police shot a 23-year-old man who was allegedly armed and fled from a traffic stop.

The shooting of a 23-year-old ignited some tensions and led to rioting last night. Up to three dozen people swept up glass and filled trash bags with rocks, bricks and bottles at an intersection where a BP gas station burned to the ground, a traffic light was bent and bus shelters were shoved to the ground Saturday night. Darlene Rose, 31, said she understands the anger that fueled the violence, but that it doesn't help. One officer was hit with a brick, one squad auto was trashed, and another squad vehicle and several business were set on fire. Blocks away from those businesses, a supermarket was said to be on fire at around 1 a.m.

Police said an officer was hospitalized after he was hit in the head by a brick thrown into a police auto.

Neither his race nor the officer's was immediately released, nor were they identified.
