Several people injured in Swiss train attack

Six people have been injured after a man set fire to a train carriage in Switzerland and stabbed several passengers on board.

The 27-year-old suspect, a Swiss national, was also hurt during the attack, said police in St. Gallen, in northeastern Switzerland.

The attack occurred at 2:20 p.m. (1220 GMT) on a train travelling between Buchs and Sennwald in the canton of St. Gallen, the police statement said.

The attacker was also taken to hospital with injuries.

Police spokesman Bruno Metzger said that the assailant poured the liquid on one woman, and that it appeared to have caught fire when it came into contact with oxygen.

Motive for the attack remains unclear, according to investigators, and the station remains closed.

- Europe on edge -A massive contingent of rescue workers rushed to the scene, including police, firefighters, ambulances and three rescue helicopters.

There are reports that flammable liquid was used in the horrifying assault.

Swiss police and special forces have sealed off the train and the interior minister is believed to be holding a special meeting on how to deal with incident.

In Belgium, meanwhile, a lone gunman armed with a Kalashnikov and other arms in August 2015 opened fire on a train but was overpowered by passengers.

Six victims, including a 6-year-old child, were being treated for stab and burn wounds as a result of the attack.
