Google Photos Taps Into AI for Video GIFs, Nostalgia Trips

TEC-Digital Life Smartphone

The second feature is aimed at users who take a ton of photos and are trying to look for the best one, or at least the one that's determined to be the best by Google's algorithm.

For all you shutterbugs who find it hard to manage your photos or videos, Google is continually upgrading its online "Photos" storage app. As the Photos team details, there are three new ways to see past experiences and memories, as well as a new way to fix all of those sideways photos in your albums.

It's a neat addition to Photos that's a natural continuation from the service's ability to stitch together collections of burst photos to make short animations. If that sounds a little odd, it's really just Google's take on "live photos", again leveraging machine learning. It will then surface "rediscover your memories" card to help you reminisce over past moments spent with that particular person. Now, the Photos app is receiving significant update that allows it to create shareable animations from the videos apart from other features. For example, if you take multiple pictures of the same subject that you've also caught on camera a week ago, you will eventually get a card showing you the best pictures from a week ago.

Google today announced a few new Google Photos features that are now rolling out across Android, iOS, and the web. Google Photos now also uses artificial intelligence to detect photos that have been uploaded on their side and offers to rotate them to their correct orientation. But the company is expanding this to include animated videos, too. Google's artificial intelligence will identify segments of a video that capture activity - such as a jump in a swimming pool - to turn into the GIF.
