Major League Baseball playoffs: San Francisco Giants vs Chicago Cubs

This time it was his arm and bat which secured the Cubs a 5-2 victory on Saturday night and a commanding 2-0 series lead in their National League Division Series matchup with the San Francisco Giants.

Game 1 of the NLDS between the number one seeded Chicago Cubs and the Wild Card round winners, the San Francisco Giants, matched the postseason tested Giants against the playoff-starved Cubs.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon hearkened back to when he was a kid and tossed around names like Whitey Ford, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson when talking about Bumgarner's ownership of the postseason. "But the Giants" lackluster stay in Chicago put them in a big hole against the loaded Cubs, who led the majors with 103 wins this year. "That's just a given". Their Game 3 starter is Jake Arrieta, only the reigning Cy Young victor.

San Francisco won the World Series in 2010, "12 and '14, and its playoff win against the Mets on Wednesday was reminiscent of its even-year magic during those title runs".

During a May 21 start, Lester gave up five earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out only one in 2 2/3 innings.

Wood struck out Conor Gillaspie to strand Pagan, then sent a one-out drive into the leftfield bleachers in the bottom half of the inning.

The Cubs' offense battered former starter Jeff Samardzija in the second inning, touching him up for three runs. Wood joins Ryan as the only relievers to homer in a postseason game. Wood has nine career home runs, so his power isn't anything new, but he's never hit a ball on such a grand stage. You'd have to believe that Johnny Cueto would return on three days of rest in a must-win Game 4, but he did just throw 118 pitches in Game 1. Four more relievers completed Chicago's second straight six-hitter, with Aroldis Chapman throwing 12 of 16 pitches at 100 miles per hour and up for his second consecutive save.

"But in general, they're now a more mature team than we are at this point because a lot of those guys have been in the league for a long time", Hoyer said. Giants manager Bruce Bochy must have come to the same conclusion because he pulled his starting pitcher after two innings - the shortest outing in Samardzija's career.

Corey Seager (L) of the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrates with third base coach Chris Woodward after hitting a first inning solo home run against the Washington Nationals in Game One of the NLDS at Nationals Park in Washington Friday.

Down 4-0, San Francisco scored two in the third when Gregor Blanco doubled in a run and scored on Brandon Belt 's sacrifice fly. "That really - I don't think it's any coincidence that he ended up hitting a home run because what he had done in his earlier at-bats he was up there working good at-bats he wasn't trying to do too much", said Maddon of Baez. "I could have gone with either one, but Jeff's body of work has been very good". Hendricks was evaulated for a right forearm contusion, and X-rays were negative for a fracture.

"He is unusual. I mean there's not many kids that age that can play a variety of different positions as well as he does", Maddon said last month.

The bullpen had three extremely reliable relievers-something that certainly can not be said about the 2016 team.

The shirt Murray was wearing had a crossed out image of a goat with "I Ain't Afraid of No Goat" written underneath.

Making his first postseason start in a Giants uniform, Cueto was nearly as dominant as Bumgarner was in shutting out the New York Mets in the wild-card game Wednesday night. Moore, who started the final regular-season game, would get throw back home in a Game 4. He gave up seven runs in a loss to Pittsburgh on September 28.
