Microsoft's Push to Win European Cloud Customers Tops $3 Billion

Satya Nadella launching a book

Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft and Brad Smith, President, Microsoft stated that the company has more than doubled its cloud capacity in Europe in the past year and now intend to deliver the cloud experience from France, starting 2017. The announcements were made in Dublin this morning as the two leaders began a four-day visit to Europe to meet with business and government leaders. We'll also highlight Microsoft's broad investment in the cloud in Europe and our unique approach to meeting customer needs by offering more choice and flexibility. They join those hubs recently announced in the United Kingdom and Germany, as well as established centers in Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, and the US.

Western Europe represents a huge opportunity for cloud computing companies.

"Microsoft has been working in artificial intelligence since the beginning of Microsoft Research, and yet we've only begun to scratch the surface of what's possible", says Shum, Executive Vice-President of the Microsoft AI and Research Group.

Silicon Valley technology giants, Google, Amazon and Microsoft have all been caught in a fierce battle to prove their might as the most reliable cloud service providers for developers and enterprises.

Microsoft is also suggesting increasing access to clean energy, as well as policies that encourage migration to the cloud, which Microsoft said can be more energy-efficient than corporations running their own data centers. "Will this tech help solve some of the pressing issues?"

European regulators have been getting tough with a variety of US tech companies, pursuing anti-trust charges against Google and most recently presenting Apple with a $14-billion tax bill.

"We are building out our servers as the edge of the cloud", he said. Not only does the Redmond, Wash., software company operate a cloud data center in the Irish capital, it was an email stored there that sparked a major court case with cloud privacy and data sovereignty implications.

Microsoft also launched a book titled "A Cloud for Global Good" that contains 78 public policy recommendations in 15 categories that aim to help cloud technologies become trustworthy, responsible and inclusive.

European fears regarding USA surveillance have forced Microsoft to build the local infrastructure necessary to power its cloud services in the region.

"With any new technology like the cloud, one of the profound things that happens is change, rapid change and disruptive change", Mr Nadella said.
