The National Weather Service in Reno has issued multiple warnings along the Sierra ahead of a series of powerful storms expected to bring rain, high-elevation snow and strong winds to western Nevada through the weekend. It warned winds could topple trees or down power lines.

Authorities expect Friday's storm to make poor traveling conditions, with wind gusts ranging from 40 to 60 miles per hour, and even reaching 80 miles per hour along the coast and over the mountains in the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for this afternoon and evening, with strong gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

Also as of 7 a.m., 160 PSE customers in Mount Vernon, 120 in Sedro-Woolley, 51 in Concrete and 24 in Burlington were estimated to be without electricity. KOMO News reported that the group of 40 children and six adults became stuck there after the camp lost power and fallen trees blocked the main roads.

Details are still in flux, the Weather Service said, "but take time now to prepare for disruptions in traffic and power grids".

High winds, gusting to gale-force speeds, were reported by the weather service across the Puget Sound area of Washington with more than 100 lightning strikes recorded over coastal waters in a single hour at one point.

There is, however, one historical storm that a lot of people seem to be pointing to as a potential comparison: The Columbus Day Storm of 1962.

Mayor Garry Bullard declared a state of emergency seeking disaster recovery assistance. Turlock residents can pick up sandbags for use during storm events to prevent damage and flooding on their property, from 8 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 901 S. Walnut Ave.

Saturday a 70 percent chance of rain is forecast for the Tri-Cities, with precipitation totaling an estimated tenth to a quarter of an inch.

Windy, rainy conditions continue in Western Washington Friday and Saturday, with a second, stronger storm expected Saturday evening, October 15.

The Washington Post reported that two storms were targeting the region starting Thursday night, with the first unloading more than a foot of rain in some areas.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A tornado struck an OR beach town Friday, sending "debris flying everywhere" and toppling powerlines and trees as strong winds and heavy rain walloped the Pacific Northwest.
