Police say 5 people killed by wrong-way driver in Vermont

Five teenagers were killed after a driver, going the wrong way on Interstate 89, caused several crashes near the Williston exit, according to Vermont State Police Capt. Mike Henry.

A school co-principal says the five teenagers killed in a crash caused by a wrong-way driver in Williston, Vermont, were all high school juniors.

Rex says the deaths were "an unprecedented tragedy" and that all were vibrant members of the community with bright futures.

Harwood's crisis team opened the school Sunday for students, faculty, staff, families, and neighbors.

The suspect, named by police as Steven Bourgoin, drove northbound in the southbound lane until he collided with a auto full of teenagers.

The crashes are under investigation. He grabbed a fire extinguisher before pulling a female victim away from the burning vehicle, authorities said.

Police say there were multiple injuries as a result of the second crash.

When Williston police arrived to investigate, Burgoin then stole the police cruiser and took off.

According to the Williston Fire Department, five patients in varying conditions from the vehicles struck with the stolen cruiser were transported by four ambulances. Police had not determined whether Bourgoin was the driver who caused the initial crash.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.

Police say near mile marker 80, Bourgoin collided with several more vehicles.

He was later arrested and taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Paul Swann, of Waterbury, was headed home when he came upon the scene of the first crash.

Shane Moody told the Burlington Free Press he was driving south on I-89 when he noticed blue lights from police vehicles behind him and a number of cars pulled over on the side of the highway in front of him. It returned several minutes later.

Burgoin, in the stolen cruiser, drove back towards the scene and then collided with the original vehicle at a high speed rate.
