Republican party on the precipice of civil war, 29 days before election

House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation's top elected Republican, effectively abandoned Donald Trump Monday, telling anxious fellow lawmakers he will not campaign for or defend the floundering businessman in the election's closing weeks. Despite rumors of a growing rift between the Republican National Committee and Trump, in a conference call Monday RNC chair Reince Preibus reportedly doubled down on support for the candidate.

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, Trump continued to attack Bill Clinton, trying to shift focus away a video released recently showing Trump making vulgar comments about women.

And they're doing so with new television ads targeting Republicans such as Mike Gallagher, the Republican running to replace Rep. Reid Ribble (R) in Wisconsin's Eighth District.

"The tape revealed on Friday was a real turning point, so I think many Republicans, especially those who are electorally vulnerable have gone to greater lengths to distance themselves from Trump", Pearson said. Gallagher criticized Trump's comments about women but has been generally supportive of his candidacy.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is not only losing the confidence of his party's leaders, he's likely losing the party's money as well.

Speaker Ryan may be done campaigning for Trump but today the Republican National Committee assured loyalists they've got their nominee's back.

And don't forget, while some Republicans have called for Trump to step down or have said the man at the top of the ticket can't count on their votes, others feel a stern talking to is sufficient as long as the candidate offers a honest apology, something he's so far proven unable to do.

But the GOP chairman said that Trump comported himself well in Sunday night's debate and apologized from the heart. He noted that she had said in Sunday's debate that the United States is "not carrying anywhere near the load that Europe and others are" in helping humanitarian refugees from Syria. "In the conference call with Ryan, California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher called GOP leaders cowards", according to one participant, who like others, insisted on anonymity in order to describe the private discussions.

The follow-up question for Republican members of Michigan's congressional delegation might be: Who's next?

GOP vice presidential candidate Mike Pence offered a full-throated endorsement of Donald Trump on Monday, saying "it takes a big man to know when he's wrong and to admit it". In the recording, Trump is heard discussing how he "moved in on a married woman like a b****", but "couldn't get there".

"Donald Trump didn't become the nominee of his party on his own", said Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton's communications director.

Before the Pence rally, state Republican Chairman Robin Hayes called the tape of Trump "inexcusable" and "absolutely disgusting in taste". John Fredericks, the spokesman for Trump's campaign in Virginia, said Stewart's protest was divisive and unhelpful at this stage in the campaign.

The Associated Press also raised some eyebrows, tweeting a "fact check" of Trump's statement that the Syrian government was fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) as "not true".

"Even though members of her own party say how risky he is to our country, standing with corporate special interests time and time, and standing with the Koch brothers almost 90 percent of the time during her first four years in office", said Hassan.

"It's been an interesting few days", Pence said at a Monday town hall in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"We have all done and said stupid and ignorant things".

Aides to Clinton and Trump acknowledge they missed several days of voter outreach in the two states. That segment can be seen on You Tube at
