At least 7 transported after Ohio State University issues active shooter alert

Investigators are looking into whether a car-and-knife attack at Ohio State University that injured 11 people was an act of terror by a Somali-born student who had once criticized the media for its portrayal of Muslims.

Abdul Razak Ali Artan drove a auto into a crowd of people, then got out and stabbed several more before he was shot and killed by campus police. A police officer narrating the six-minute online video says to fight only as a last resort and until police arrive.

Columbus police Chief Kim Jacobs, asked at a news conference whether authorities were considering the possibility it was a terrorist act, said: "I think we have to consider that it is". Artan talked about being a Muslim and said that Columbus State had offered more accommodations for prayer. The scene is now secure, officials said.

Law enforcement relied on a network of surveillance cameras to identify the gray sedan used in the attack, Stone said.

The suspect left the vehicle armed with the knife and stabbed several others, Ohio State University Police Chief Craig Stone said.

Six sustained injuries from being struck by the auto; five had lacerations from the knife attack.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that the suspect is believed to have initially struck people with a auto before beginning to stab victims. There was no indication that the suspect shot anyone. The official stressed this is early in the investigation and the sweep of campus continues.

A spokesman for Ohio State University says injuries in the attack on campus included stab wounds and being struck by a vehicle.

At least eight people have been sent to hospitals.

The fate of any suspect or suspects wasn't immediately clear.

The patients were split among OSU Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

"I just heard some screams, and I saw people running", he said.

Leaders of Muslim organizations and mosques in the Columbus area condemned the attacks while cautioning people against jumping to conclusions or blaming a religion or an ethnicity.

Ohio State tweeted Monday morning that all classes would be canceled for the rest of the day.

A spokesperson for the Columbus Division of Fire, Rebecca Diem, confirmed to NPR that at least one of the nine transported was said to be in critical condition.

Authorities said two people had been stabbed, four people had been hurt by a auto and two others were treated for lacerations. It didn't have details on the other five.

A picture allegedly showing Ohio State University attacker Abdul Razak Ali Artan dead has gone viral online, sparking controversy over the graphic image and the reporting of news in real-time.

At around 10 a.m. ET on Monday, the university warned students in a series of tweets that there was an active shooter on campus.

Before the attacks, a gas leak was reported at a building near Watts Hall, at West 19th Avenue and College Road.

Incidentally, Artan, a Muslim, was interviewed by the Ohio State student newspaper in August.

Irwin told Global Calgary she was studying in her apartment on south campus Monday morning when she started getting text messages and news alerts that the campus was locked down.

"Run Hide Fight", one of the tweets declared. It means: Run away if possible; get out of view; or try to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter if your life is in imminent danger. A large police presence was seen on the campus.
