Bangladesh pushes back Rohingya Muslims fleeing from neighbouring Myanmar

"Now it's very hard for the Bangladeshi government to say the border is open because this would further encourage the government of Myanmar to continue the atrocities and push them out until they have achieved their ultimate goal of ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority in Myanmar", McKissick told the BBC.

It said Ali expressed "serious concern on the influx of Rakhine Muslims into the territory of Bangladesh in spite of Bangladesh Border Guard's efforts to stop the flow" as he briefed the foreign diplomats on the evolving situation in Myanmar and Bangladesh-Myanmar relations at the state guest house of Padma.

But the current crisis, the most serious bloodshed in Rakhine since hundreds were killed in communal clashes in 2012, has renewed global criticism that she has done too little to alleviate the plight of the Rohingya minority, who are denied citizenship and access to basic services.

Troops have poured into a strip of land along Myanmar's border with Bangladesh that is largely home to the stateless Muslim Rohingya minority since a series of coordinated and deadly attacks on police border posts last month. Thousands more are reportedly gathering on the border.

The Myanmar government does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, though they have lived in the country for generations.

"We nabbed them after they illegally trespassed (into Bangladesh).

We have urged them to improve the situation there for the Rohingyas to return to their homes", Bangladeshi Additional Foreign Secretary Kamrul Ahsan told reporters after summoning Myanmar Ambassador U Myo Myint Ahasan to his ministry.

Hundreds of Indonesians angered over the persecution of Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar have protested outside the Myanmar embassy in the Indonesian capital.

The minister told the envoys that Dhaka took a series of steps to "establish and maintain friendly relations with Myanmar, particularly with the newly elected NLD government through engagements at different levels".

"It's very hard for the Bangladeshi government to say the border is open because this would further encourage the government of Myanmar to continue the atrocities and push them out until they have achieved their ultimate goal of ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority in Myanmar", McKissick said.

It said "desperate people" were crossing the border seeking safety and shelter and asked Myanmar to "ensure the integrity of its border".

Jannat Ara said she fled with neighbours after her father was arrested and her 17-year-old sister disappeared, she believes raped and killed by the army.

A Myanmar presidential spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Mark Farmaner, the group's director, said Myanmar's military was using the ruling party leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, as "a human shield against criticism and action from the worldwide community over the human rights violations they are committing". Food and medical aid to more than 150,000 people has been suspended for more than 40 days in the area, which is under a military lockdown.

Cox's Bazar BGB Captain Lt Col Imranullah Sarkar said among them were 62 who were held by Teknaf police during a combing operation on the Teknaf-Chittagong highway yesterday. Between 200,000 and 500,000 undocumented Rohingya are believed to be living in the country.
