Rebels stay put as 10-hour ceasefire in Aleppo ends

Triumphal Arch in Palmyra Syria

At least 74 civilians, including 25 children, have been killed in an eight-day rebel offensive on the government-held part of Aleppo city, the pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said neither rebels nor civilians left the city during the ceasefire that was unilaterally observed by both Russian Federation and Syria.

But they ended the pause on Friday after accusing rebels of having used the pause to reinforce and launch attacks on government-held areas.

Rights groups and the United Nations have sharply criticized the rebels over the shelling of western Aleppo districts, which has killed a number of civilians.

Protesters from the Syria Campaign blocked an entrance to the Russian Embassy in London on November 3 with some 800 mannequin limbs to symbolize the reported killing of hundreds of civilians in Syrian and Russian bombing raids in the city of Aleppo.

Moscow claimed that the ceasefire was to allow a "humanitarian" pause to the fighting, yet Assad regime officials and their Russian backers later came out and said that Syrian opposition fighters would also be allowed to leave Aleppo via these so-called humanitarian corridors.

Rebel fighters ride through western Aleppo. But there were reports of airstrikes on the city's edge and in rural areas.

However activists say no-one left the area and government and Russian forces are expected to resume their attacks.

A video, posted online by the opposition-run Syrian news agency Thiqa, is said to show a missile falling on a town in western Aleppo province. A team of first responders known as the Syrian Civil Defence, or White Helmets, said at least three people were killed in the airstrikes and 15 others wounded. It is the second time insurgents have tried to break the siege imposed on the territory since July.

Abu Saeed al-Halabi, a Dutch member of Fatah al-Sham based in Aleppo, said Russian Federation has intensified its airstrikes during the insurgent-led offensive on Aleppo's western countryside, "the proposed end destination" for the potential evacuees from eastern Aleppo.

A rebel spokesman, Yasser al-Youssef of the Nour el-Din el-Zinki group, said opposition fighters are anticipating a "violent air campaign" in eastern Aleppo.
