United Kingdom group delivers Rohingya petition to Myanmar embassy

Violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State has sent hundreds of Rohingya Muslims fleeing across the border to Bangladesh amid allegations of abuses by security forces, posing the biggest test yet for Suu Kyi's eight-month-old administration.

"Despite our border guards' honest effort to prevent the influx, thousands of distressed Myanmar citizens including women, children and elderly people continue to cross the border into Bangladesh", the Bangladeshi foreign ministry said.

He said the Myanmar government under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize victor Aung San Suu Kyi must stop the carnage by its military which had aroused anger among the global community, more so when the country was moving towards democracy.

Over the past six weeks, rights groups have expressed concern over reports of killings, rapes, arbitrary arrests and other violations in villages predominantly occupied by Rohingya in Myanmar's troubled Rakhine State amid military operations launched after fatal attacks on police stations October 9.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch released satellite images which it said showed that hundreds of homes had been razed in Rohingya villages over the past six weeks.

For many, reaching the border does not mean an end to suffering.

The Rohingya are denied citizenship in Burma, officially called Myanmar, and are viewed by many as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, which also does not accept them.

"We nabbed them after they illegally trespassed [into Bangladesh]".

Police said they had detained at least four people smugglers who took money from Rohingya in exchange for organising their journey to Bangladesh.

Underscoring the diplomatic tensions, Muslim-majority Malaysia said on Wednesday it was considering pulling out of a regional soccer tournament co-hosted by Myanmar in protest over its handling of the crisis.

The senior United Nations official further noted that keeping the border open "would further encourage the government of Myanmar to continue the atrocities and push them out until they have achieved their ultimate goal of ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority in Myanmar".

Begum, now staying at the Kutupalong camp in southern Bangladesh, told CNN several women in her village were raped by regime soldiers.

Bangladesh has tightened border patrols in the face of the influx of the refugees and has asked Myanmar to take them back. Food and medical aid to more than 150,000 people has been suspended for more than 40 days in the area, which is under a military lockdown.

Md Alwi said the Malaysan government should act through its voice in ASEAN and the OIC by demanding that Myanmar end the atrocities against the Rohingyas.

A spokesman for Myanmar President Htin Kyaw slammed the comments.

"We ourselves see (the refugees) fleeing across the border, coming inside Bangladesh, in the forests, on the main roads, in the villages, in the makeshift camps".

Many children live in the Rohingya camp.

She said the mine had killed her neighbour Johra, who was travelling with them.
