How Payet move to Marseille almost fell through

Although West Ham originally said Payet must stay with the east London club, they agreed to a transfer after accepting a fee of nearly 2-1/2 times what they paid for him, though they were still disappointed with the player's decision.

"I don't need to justify my behaviour at all", Payet said at his unveiling as a Marseille player.

It's a recurrent theme in Payet's career, and now it has taken him away from West Ham and back to Marseille.

"He will be presented during a press conference this Monday, January 30, 2017 at 2:30 p.m.at the Robert Louis-Dreyfus Center in the presence of OM President Jacques-Henri Eyraud and sports director Andoni Zubizarreta".

Payet had told West Ham he no longer wished to play for the club and was pushing to leave the London Stadium, with his heart set on returning to former club Marseille.

He was subsequently banished to train with the U23 squad while Marseille made numerous offers to convince West Ham into altering their defiant stance of not selling the player.

"It's happened at a time when I was missing France". I don't need to justify my behaviour at all.

"It was drawn-out because I started my stand-off with West Ham a long time ago".

"Earlier in the week, Slaven Bilic warned the French club that the Hammers would not accept a cut price bid just because Payet had had a tantrum", explains the paper, which says the French side have called Bilic's bluff.

The attacking midfielder scored three goals in the Euro 2016, thereby helping France reach the final, where the hosts were beaten by Portugal.

"Morning, bring back your Payet shirt to any of the club shops & you will get a new replacement for £25, full details on WHU web site today", she tweeted in reply to a question about shirt costs. There he thrived too, doing the same things in France's blue as he had in West Ham's colors.
