HP recalls more than 100000 batteries for possible overheating

HP recalls more than 100,000 laptop computer batteries that could overheat

According to Health Canada, HP Canada has only received one report in which affected laptop battery caught on fire, but it didn't injure anyone.

Batteries previously identified as not affected by the June 2016 recall could be included in this expanded announcement. Affecting a myriad of laptops sold March 2013 and October 2016, the recall (via CNET) is actually an expansion to an earlier recall in which an additional 41,000 laptop batteries were recalled over the same concerns in June 2016.

The Galaxy Note 7 recall is probably the most prominent case where a device manufacturer had to recall and cancel a product on account of fire hazards. Then just look for the battery; the affected units measure "8 to 10.5 inches long, 2 inches wide and about 1 inch high", the CPSC said.

The battery bar code is located on the underside of the battery. This week, the company's tacked a pretty massive number onto that tally, adding 101,000 additional batteries (on top of around 4,000 in Mexico and 3,000 in Canada).

This expanded recall involves lithium-ion batteries containing Panasonic cells that are used in HP notebook computers.

In the U.S., users can call HP customer service at 1-888-202-4320 to request a replacement battery. The batteries, which were sold separately, cost $50 to $90. Customers with HP laptops are advised to check whether their computer is one of those affected, and if so, to stop using the battery with immediate effect. At the same time, though, it urged the technology industry to put a greater emphasis on battery safety.

Those who need replacement batteries can call HP at 1-888-202-4320 or go to the company's website for the recall to see if their notebook is affected.

If they start with 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL or 6EBVA, then they should remove the batteries and contact HP for a free replacement.

Users can easily check if their battery is eligible for recall.
