Middlesbrough confirms Atlanta United signs USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan

Guzan has made five appearances for the club so far this season, three of which in the Premier League, but his opportunities have been few and far between.

Guzan, who has served as back-up to Victor Valdes at Boro this term, has signed a "multi-year deal" with Atlanta United.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Guzan signs a pre-contract agreement with Atlanta United.

Guzan was the first-choice US goalkeeper at last year's Copa America, but Guzan's lack of playing time led to Howard regaining the starting job last fall. Currently United's roster features two goalkeepers: former Kansas City keeper Alec Kann and Greek keeper Alexandros Tabakis. After starting his career with Chivas USA, Guzan has spent the past nine seasons in the Premier League, mostly with Aston Villa. He remained at Villa Park until the summer, moving to Boro after the Villans were relegated.

Guzan moved to the Riverside stadium on a free transfer last summer following Villa's relegation to the Championship, but he has only featured five times for Aitor Karanka's men after Victor Valdes was preferred in goal to the 51-times capped worldwide. He and Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard have been splitting time as the USA's starter since Howard returned from a one-year absence in 2015.
