Southampton's Long sends Liverpool packing in EFL Cup

The reaction to Sturridge’s performance tonight is… brutal

"We've been one of the most exciting teams to watch [during Klopp's time in charge]". Jürgen Klopp's side suffered their second defeat at Anfield in four days when Shane Long converted at the death to book the Saints' place at Wembley.

Speaking on the Jim White show on talkSPORT, he said: "He made some great points, the main one being that Liverpool up until a few weeks ago were being talked about as Chelsea's main competitors to win the league and how well they had done to that point was because of Klopp".

Liverpool get another chance to go on the trophy trail in the FA Cup with Wolves visiting Anfield on Saturday with a potential 11 Premier League teams capable of progressing through to the last 16.

"We are not the only team in the world that has to do this", Klopp said after a third loss in five matches.

Liverpool got the first half-chance of the game when Adam Lallana did well to win possession deep into Southampton territory before setting up Coutinho, who in turn reached Daniel Sturridge on the edge of the area.

"We knew it before so it's not a problem but we still adapt to it, 100 per cent". It's the most hard thing in football but we are not the only team who has to accept this.

"I look at the manager, certainly in the last two games - I'm a massive fan - but the changes from the bench are coming far too slow, they're coming late in the game", he added.

Klopp felt there were "one or two counter-attacks" that Liverpool could have defended better, in that they "should not be in one-on-one situations with [Nathan] Redmond" but said that the rest was a result of "good play of Southampton".

Klopp's men made an encouraging start to the second half and almost drew level on aggregate after a howler from Forster, the Southampton goalkeeper letting Can's powerful shot slip through his hands, only to recover just in time to prevent the ball from crossing the goalline.

That, in a nutshell, is what most teams are doing - particularly against a Liverpool side shorn of the pace and cutting edge of wide-man Sadio Mane who is enjoying an extended run at the African Nations Cup with Senegal.

"Why are so many people surprised about Liverpool fading in second half of season?" he wrote on Twitter.

"The secret of 'pre-season periodisation" is to develop top fit players while maintaining rather than losing freshness.
