Thousands Protest Australia Day in Sydney Condemning Holiday as 'Invasion Day'

Australia Day has diverse meaning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians - some see it as a day of invasion, a day of mourning and of assertion of sovereignty, and some see it as a day of survival.

To commemorate Invasion Day this year, thousands poured out into the streets from Melbourne to Sydney to Perth, clad in the black, yellow and red colors of the Aboriginal flag. Remember when planning events or engaging with social media: "images and words celebrating the arrival of European culture and people can be deeply offensive to many". He has been taken to hospital for assessment.

The date of the national holiday, January 26, marks the anniversary of the arrival of the British First Fleet in Sydney in 1788 - and the start to centuries of subjugation of the continent's native people by the colonizers.

In business, they say, the most expensive or risky words one can utter are: "we've always done it this way". "A woman who was participating in the march also sustained minor injuries", a spokeswoman for the New South Wales Police told the news website.

The man, 20, who allegedly tried to light the flag was arrested and was taken to Redfern police station for questioning.

Police said it was an "isolated incident in an otherwise peaceful demonstration" and overall they were pleased with the behaviour of the crowd.

He went on to say that the protesters were "just miserable, gutted people I wish could crawl under a rock and hide for a little bit".

Indigenous activist Sam Watson said aboriginal people needed to work together to help others, particularly the younger generation, affected by negative issues such as drug use.

Despite wide criticism of the date celebrated, it seems that the majority of Australians do not see the need for change, with a poll taken in 2004 indicating that 79 per cent of the population were satisfied with 26 January.

Tasmanian governor Kate Warner added to the debate, saying changing the date was something for Australians to consider.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he did not support changing the date.

While at least half of the crown was non-indigenous, the front of the marching column consisted of mostly indigenous protesters. They carried placards, didgeridoos, makeshift spears and clapping sticks, walking through a strong police presence.

LGBTI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are often left out of important conversations in each of those communities, so we made a decision to ask three queer Indigenous voices how they feel about Australia Day.
