Trump set to move on Mexican border wall

Determined to wall off America's border with Mexico, President Donald Trump triggered a diplomatic clash and fresh fight over trade Thursday as the White House proposed a 20 percent tax on imports from the key USA ally and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto abruptly scrapped next week's trip to Washington.

Mr Trump appeared to try to defuse the spat between the two countries on Friday, saying: "Great respect for Mexico, I love the Mexican people".

Relations have been frayed since Mr Trump launched his campaign in 2015, characterising Mexican migrants as "murderers and rapists" and pledging to build a wall that he said Mexico would pay for.

"I have said time and time again, Mexico will not pay for any wall", Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto had earlier said. Peled said that Netanyahu's tweet wasn't necessarily referring to the wall that Trump is planning but the fence on Israel's southern border with Sinai. "I had not seen this solidarity since the 1985 Mexico City quake".

A coalition of Mexican farm and consumer groups, however, did call for such a boycott when it raised the battle flag on January 18, two days before Mr Trump took office.

"But I'm representing the people of the United States and I'm going to represent them as somebody should represent them, not how they've been represented in the past where we lose to every single country", Trump said. "If you ever go to San Diego or even Nogales, Ariz., you'll see tunnels that we uncover on a weekly basis", the Arizona Republican said. And 95 percent of all tomatoes the US imports come from Mexico.

Trump signed an executive order Wednesday on his central campaign promise that directs federal agencies to begin constructing a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border.

Speaking before some 200 Mexican and foreign journalists at a conference called to discuss the Mexico-US relationship, which had cooled considerably during the past week, Slim declared that "together we're stronger".

On his first full day as president, he told members of the intelligence community gathered at CIA headquarters that the US should have taken Iraq's oil for "economic reasons", given America's efforts in the country, adding, "But, OK, maybe you'll have another chance".

Trade ties are in the balance after Mr Trump vowed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and slap high tariffs on American companies that have moved jobs south of the border.

They have suggested the country could expel United States law enforcement agents, stop detaining Central American migrants or no longer inspect north-bound lorries for drug shipments. "What we should do instead is buy what is produced in Mexico".

Top Mexican political figures are debating how to fight back against USA president Donald Trump's aggressive stance on trade and immigration.
