White House Defends Putting Bannon on National Security Council

He had already been playing an important role in directing the president's foreign policy and was in the Oval Office on Saturday when Trump talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders.

Amid the chaos that unfolded at airports throughout the United States and overseas in the 24 hours after Donald Trump signed an executive order barring the entry of non-U.S. residents from seven majority-Muslim countries and suspending the entry of refugees, the president quietly issued three more executive orders-one of which reshuffled the National Security Council and granted controversial White House strategist Stephen Bannon a regular seat in security meetings at the highest levels of government. Kennedy, who preferred policy-making with ad hoc groups, dismantled Eisenhower's elaborate NSC machinery and allowed the Special Assistant for National Security Affairs and his staff to assume the primary coordination role.

The changes, Trump said, will bring "a lot of efficiency and, I think, a lot of additional safety".

Neither new appointee has experience with issues of national security; Priebus is a lifelong Republican political operative, and Bannon is the former head of Breitbart News, which he said he'd made into the "platform of the Alt-Right", a white supremacist movement.

Like Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, Bannon was appointed to a White House position that does not require Senate confirmation.

"Who needs military advice or (intelligence) to make policy on Isis, Syria, Afghanistan, DPRK?" she tweeted. He was, said Bolten, sending a signal to the public and to his administration.

Trump also announced that his Chief Strategist Steve Bannon would be a part of that restructuring. Former national security council staffers say their day-to-day meetings and process were not governed by whatever formal instruction issued by their respective presidents. The pair will attend when "issues pertaining to their responsibilities and expertise are to be discussed", the president's memorandum stated. Bannon and Miller then reportedly overruled Homeland Security guidance that Trump's order did not cover green card holders-permanent, legal residents of the United States-although the White House said Sunday that the ban will not include such residents, although they may see extra vetting at airports.

"Stone-cold insane", is how former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice described the decision.

"I am anxious about the national security council who are the members of it and who are the permanent members of it".

"He is a former naval officer", Spicer said of Bannon. "The appointment of Mr. Bannon is something which is a radical departure from any National Security Council in history", McCain said on "Face the Nation" on CBS on Sunday morning.
