Williams sisters face off in Australian Open final

She will play the victor of the later semifinal match between her sister Serena and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Serena reaching the final should be no surprise; the 35-year-old now is the No. 2-ranked singles player in the world and will be seeking her 23rd Grand Slam title.

Vandeweghe advanced to a will be playing her first major semifinal, using a powerful forehand to dictate play against French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in a 6-4, 6-0 win.

The 25-year-old, who knocked out top seed Angelique Kerber in the previous round, hit 31 winners and broke Muguruza four times in a ruthless display of baseline hitting.

She also reached the final of the Australian Open for the first time since 2003 - a gap of 14 years. It's the first time Venus has reached a Grand Slam final since Wimbledon in 2009.

Williams needed four match points on Vandeweghe's serve in the last game before converting. I know a Williams is going to win this tournament.

"I probably just wanted to do really well", Konta said.

"Oh my gosh I'm so excited", said Williams after closing out the one hour and 48-minute match. But Venus ended her incredible run with a chest-thumping victory to keep the dream final between the William sisters (Venus vs Serena) alive. She won her first Grand Slam match-up versus Venus 7-5, 6-3.

The younger Williams sister acknowledged Venus as her toughest opponent.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni was anxious after her win over Jennifer Brady she would get fined for speaking her mind so she got creative with her answer instead.

MELBOURNE, Australia - Another Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal final is still in the mix at an Australian Open with an nearly retro vibe.

It was the only chance she needed, keeping her cool in the pressure-cooker atmosphere to write another chapter in her lengthy career, winning on her fourth match point.

Serena is the sister she loves dearly but she is also the rival who has dwarfed her achievements on the court.

Williams is the oldest woman to make a grand slam semi-final since legendary compatriot Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994.

That win saw the thirteenth seed join Serena, 35, after her comfortable straight sets victory over fellow veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. She has a pretty good record against me, and we have a good record against each other.

Serena acknowledged Lucic-Baroni, who was playing in her first semifinal match at a major since Wimbledon in 1999, as an inspiration for her comeback to the highest level after years of struggle.

"One day, I will say a long, big story about all of the things that happened to me".
