A Bobcat Escaped Her Enclosure At The National Zoo

Bobcats are not known to be aggressive to humans according to experts

Saffoe said Ollie is equipped to survive and that bobcats sometimes catch birds that land in their enclosure. When zoo staff called the bobcats for their morning feeding, the zoo said Ollie did not respond at 10:40 a.m. Students at nearby American University were alerted by text message that the animal was on the loose.

"The approximately 25-pound bobcat likely climbed through a small opening in the mesh net that encloses her habitat".

The bobcat poses no danger to the public, the zoo said. The area around the bobcat exhibit has been closed since Ollie was discovered missing this morning.

"We know that she is absolutely capable of surviving, even thriving, in this area", said Brandie Smith, the zoo's associate director of animal care. DC owners of pomeranians and fancy chickens may wish to keep their pets inside.

The 25-pound and almost 7-years-old wild born Ollie was last seen 7:30 a.m. Monday by a keeper, according to the zoo's website. "It will be very, very hard to find her".

Zookeepers believe the bobcat escaped through a small hole in a mesh fence meant to keep her in.

Although bobcats are not typically a threat to people, they will attack dogs and cats as well as mice, squirrels, rabbits and small deer.

This isn't the first high-profile escape from the Zoo in recent years. I hope they take a picture of her and let her be, because it appears that Ollie has big plans, man. He was recaptured in D.C.'s Adams Morgan neighborhood the following afternoon. Saffoe, realist who probably sighs a lot, added, "Cats are survivors".
