Apple is reportedly gearing up to manufacture iPhones in India

Talking to Bloomberg News, Kharge had even said that all the iPhones manufactured on the Indian soil will be used to meet the demands of the Indian market.

The US company has tasked Taiwanese company Wistron to manufacture iPhones at its facility near Bengaluru.

For nearly a year, strong rumors pointed to Apple possibly manufacturing their flagship phone in India.

The Apple's representatives including Priya Balasubramaniam, VP iPhone operations, Ali Khanafer, head of government affairs, Dheeraj Chugh, director, iPhone operations, and Priyesh Povanna, country counsel held a meeting with officials and ministers of the state government to discuss about the initiatives in manufacturing and possible collaborations.

Priyank Kharge, state minister for information technology, confirmed on telephone that the company had been cleared to make the phones in Bangalore and said it was a validation of the state's industry-friendly policies. In reality, Apple accounts for less than two per cent of shipments in India as of now. A year ago when Apple CEO Tim Cook visited India, he had discussed the possibility of manufacturing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but no official confirmation was given.

Apple's Make in India plans for iPhones has been reported by the media for sometime now.

It said it welcomed a proposal from the tech giant to begin initial manufacturing operations in the state, whose capital is the tech hub Bangalore. Though it did not provide a timeline, production is expected to begin in June.

Apple has plans to start manufacturing iPhones in the state of Karnataka, located in southern India. This was seen as a prelude to Apple making iPhones in India.

Telangana, Maharashtra and Gujarat governments were also competing with Karnataka for the Apple factory. Recently, Apple also argued government release some norms of 30 percent.

"We are in discussions on a number of things (in India), including retail stores", Apple CEO Tim Cook said in post-earnings call on January 31, "and fully intend to invest significantly in the country and believe it's a great place to be".

Apple will soon after launch Apple owned and operated Apple Stores in several major metropolitan cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Ahmadabad.
