Arizona woman deported to Mexico despite complying with immigration officials

She was put under an order of supervision, which required her to report on a provided schedule to an ICE office until her order of removal was "affected", or acted on.

The woman has been living in the USA since she left Mexico at 14.

According to the Arizona Republic, Garcia de Rayos was arrested in 2008 during a workplace raid and convicted in 2009 of felony criminal impersonation.

Then the administration of President Barack Obama changed its priorities on immigration and she was allowed to stay, they said. After each meeting, the married mother of two went back to her family.

"Ms. Garcia De Rayos is now being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) based on a removal order issued by the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review which became final in May 2013", read the ICE statement.

There are 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the USA today and while it's unclear exactly how many will be affected by the order, there are already clear signs that large swaths of the community at risk. In his executive order, the president calls for the deportation of people in the USA illegally who "have been convicted of any criminal offense", "have been charged with any criminal offense", "have committed acts that constitute a chargeable criminal offense" or "are subject to a final order of removal".

"ICE has done what President Trump wanted to do, which is deport and separate our families", said Marisa Franco, director of the Phoenix-based advocacy group Mijente.

She had checked in yearly with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office after she was caught using a fake Social Security number during a raid at a water park where she worked.

Garcia de Rayos says she's not sure what comes next for her but that her parents, who live in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, are headed to Nogales to reunite with her; she came to the USA from Guanajuato when she was 14.

She became the subject of a court-issued removal order that became final in July 2013, and this is where the story starts to diverge. That means ICE could have chose to ignore the priorities and deport her before anyway.

Protesters on Wednesday night said Garcia de Rayos was in one of the vehicles used to transport people in ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) custody to detention centers, or to Arizona's border with Mexico for deportation. ICE said, in a statement, that they coordinated her deportation with Mexican consular representatives. It's likely that by Thursday morning, Garcia de Rayos had completed processing and was in Mexico - away from home and family.

Garcia de Rayos spoke from the Kino Border Initiative, a soup kitchen and shelter in Nogales, Sonora, where many migrants go after being deported. "We want her back, back in our arms".

The Mexican government says that it expects more cases similar to Garcia de Rayos'. Her husband, too, is an undocumented immigrant. The former president had prioritized the deportation of people who were convicted of crimes such as aggravated felonies, terrorism or activity in a criminal street gang.
