Authorities play banned version of German national anthem during Fed Cup tie

"In no way did we mean any disrespect", the statement said.

The former World No. 9, a 2014 French Open semifinalist, fell to the smaller, less-accomplished Alison Riske 7-6, 6-2 in the first match of the best-of-five series.

Before Germany's Andrea Petkovic and Alison Riske of the US took the court in Hawaii, a singer inadvertently performed a long-banned Nazi-era version of the country's national anthem.

The United States is facing Germany in quarterfinal play and now holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

It has apologised, tweeting that the mistake would not occur again.

Before the Fed Cup match began, the Hawaiian singer performed a rendition of the anthem, included the controversial words, "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles, über alles in der Welt", which translates as "Germany, Germany, above all, above all in the world" at the first round match in Maui.

"I've never felt more disrespected in my whole life, let alone in Fed Cup, and I've played Fed Cup for 13 years now and it is the worst thing that has ever happened to me", she said, stressing "It's 2017 - something like this simply should not happen in the United States".

She clarified her comments a day later, writing on Twitter that she was still emotional about her match when she was asked about the anthem directly afterward. And again, it's not the worst that ever happened to me in my LIFE.

CNN reported that during former opera singer Will Kimble's performance of "Das Deutschlandlied", both the crowd and the German team can be seen singing different lyrics from Kimble, with members of the audience and the German team singing loud enough to be heard over video of the performance. "But it is the worst that happened to me in my Fed Cup life".

Riske was apologetic in her press conference.

The completion of the singles match between CoCo Vandeweghe and Julia Goerges-rain halted play with Vandeweghe ahead 6-3, 3-1-is up next between the countries.
