Bridge Report Finds Nearly 56000 Bridges Still Need Attention

With 1,739 of its 12,915 bridges classified as structurally deficient, this year marks the second year in a row in which Louisiana has moved up in the American Road & Transportation Builders Association's ranking for worrisome bridges.

Almost 56,000 bridges nationwide, which vehicles cross 185 million times a day, are structurally deficient, a bridge construction group announced Wednesday.

That's good for second behind Iowa, which again led the annual report with 4,968, also an improvement for the state from past year.

Of more than 4,200 bridges in CT, 8 percent are classified as structurally deficient, according to ARTBA.

The list reflects data gathered by the Transportation Department which uses a nine-point scale to score the state of the nation's bridges. The part of I-95 that covers Olde Richmond and Fishtown was the most traveled in the state, with 208,978 daily crossings.

Over 1,000 bridges need some form of update or fix, and the study suggests that will cost $2 billion.

The ARTBA report says the estimated cost of needed repairs on Louisiana's 3,217 bridges is $4 billion.

Black says the data shows 28 percent of bridges (173,919) are over 50 years old and have never had any major reconstruction work in that time. "It is outdated, overused, underfunded and in desperate need of modernization", said Alison Premo Black, chief economist of ARTBA. "State and local transportation departments haven't been provided the resources to keep pace with the nation's bridge needs".

Iowa was the state with the highest number of structurally deficient bridges at 4,968, while Rhode Island was the state with the highest percentage at 25%. The District of Columbia (9), Nevada (31), DE (43), Hawaii (64) and Utah (95) have the least.

The report adds more than 1,300 bridges are posted for load, which means vehicles of a certain size or weight are restricted. The top 14 most-traveled deficient bridges are in California.
