Complaint: Man wanted attack similar to Dylann Roof killings

Federal authorities have busted a SC man with white supremacist links for attempting to buy a gun in order to carry out a massacre "in the spirit of Dylann Roof", according to federal court papers.

McDowell established connections with the hate group White Supremacy Extremists during previous prison stints and thought the agent was a member of the Aryan Nations hate group, according to the affidavit.

The two met as planned Wednesday, and McDowell bought a.40-caliber handgun, the firing pin of which had been shaved down, for $109.

During ongoing communication with the undercover agent, the testimony said, it was revealed that McDowell was talking on his mother's landline and cellphone.

Prosecutors said McDowell told the undercover employee he hadn't decided on a place or time for the attack, but the documents describe the scale of his plans.

The South Carolina native never disclosed a specific target to the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent for his premeditated slaughter, but he did post a link to Facebook of the Temple Emanu-El Conservative Synagogue in Myrtle Beach, SC. In an instant message on Facebook, McDowell requested an "iron", a code word for a firearm, the complaint against him said. His rap sheet from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says he was arrested on numerous counts of burglary, assault and battery, drug charges, larceny and malicious injury to personal property between 2006 and 2013.

McDowell went on to say that "I got the heart to do that s***, but I don't have to the good training", the document states. "Like, I got desire ... not for nobody else ... it just ..."

"I wish the day we all get off Facebook and white Warriors like we was born to be like Dylan roof but we gotta do it in a smart [way]", the post read. "I want something where I can say, "I fucking did that".me personally".

The federal complaint states that McDowell arranged to meet the agent on February 15, when he bought the gun and ammo for approximately $109. He was being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, the jail in Horry County, according to WMBF.

McDowell indicated on January 6, he was looking for a gun and met an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation employee about a week later at an unidentified hotel in Myrtle Beach.

While McDowell didn't tell the agent about any specific building that he wanted to attack, he did post a link to the synagogue's website on Facebook in late December, which led officers to believe that it was a prime potential target.

McDowell, also known as Benji, met with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent on Wednesday to purchase a gun at the parking lot of a Myrtle Beach Hampton Inn.

A detention hearing is scheduled for February 21 in Florence.
