Four militants, 2 soldiers, civilian die in Kashmir gun battle

Kulgam and adjoining Shopian were sealed.

Meanwhile curfew like restrictions have been imposed in parts of south Kashmir where situation remains tense following the killing of civilians and militants in the Kulgam encounter yesterday. A 10-hour gunfight then broke out.

The fighting began after police and soldiers cordoned off the southern village of Frisal overnight following a tip that militants were hiding in a house, said police Inspector-General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani.

Weapons were recovered from the dead gunmen, the army said.

Bandipora encounter: An unidentified terrorist was killed and five army personnel were injured after an encounter broke out in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials say the civilian who died was inside the house which came under fire from the security forces.

Security forces in Kashmir seem to have learned no lessons from the 2016 uprising with at least dozen civilians in Kulgam hit by bullets above waistline, a clear violation of Standard Operating Procedure for handling protesters. The cops retaliated by firing tear smoke shells and resorting to heavy baton charge to disperse the stone pelting youth.

On Sunday, people gathered in thousands at the funeral of the militants and the civilians.

Both countries accuse each other of violating a 2003 truce accord.

Strikes in the valley started from February 9 on the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, followed by "UN office chalo" campaign on 10th and anniversary of JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat on 11th and now another strike call by separatists on Monday.

The opposition National Conference party has demanded a probe into the incident.
