'Imperative' US Lead Global Pushback for Iran Missile Tests, Senators Tell Trump

The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Friday against 25 individuals and companies involved in procuring ballistic missile technology for Iran.

Earlier in the week, US National Security Advisor Michael Flynn said the missile test was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which prohibits Iran from participating in any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering a nuclear weapon.

The U.S. slapped new sanctions on Iran on Friday after the Trump administration signaled it wanted to punish Tehran for its latest ballistic missile test.

A Revolutionary Guards commander said Iran would use its missiles if its security is under threat, as the elite force defied new US sanctions on its missile programme by holding a military exercise on Saturday.

In a series of early morning tweets, Trump wrote: "Iran is playing with fire - they don't appreciate how "kind" President Obama was to them".

Mr Mattis did not say he thought there should be more United States troops in the Middle East to deal with Iran, however.

Cruise missiles are harder to counter than ballistic missiles since they fly at lower altitudes and can evade enemy radar, confounding missile defense and hitting targets deep inside an opponent's territory, the U.S.in this instance.

The US Treasury says the sanctions are part of its "ongoing efforts to counter Iranian malign activity overseas". The US argues that the missile test may have violated a United Nations ban, though Iran insists that the missile was not created to carry nuclear warheads, and thus it would not be covered by the ban.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said the list of the targeted American figures and companies will be released later.

The U.S. also deployed the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole to the Gulf of Aden in response to missiles fired by Houthi rebels (who control the government) in Yemen at a Saudi frigate.

They came after Iran test-fired a ballistic missile last week. Trump said during his election campaign that he would stop Iran's missile programme.

On Wednesday, Flynn insisted the missile test was in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The remarks by Flynn are "baseless and provocative", Qasemi said, adding that "none of the Iranian missiles has been designed for delivering nuclear weapons". "Should have been thankful for the awful deal the US made with them!"
