Kids Shot, 2 Die From Chicago Violence

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the shooting should be a "turning point".

About 4:15 p.m.in Austin, a male was shot in the arm and a female in the finger in the 200 block of South Laramie, police said.

The shootings highlight the street gang violence that police say was largely responsible for 762 homicides a year ago - almost 300 more than occurred in 2015 - and more than 3,500 shooting incidents.

"We have yet another innocent child that can lose (his) life over senseless gun violence", Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at the scene of the shooting shortly before police announced that Lavontay had died from his injuries. "I got a bullet in my stomach".

The little boy who died is the nephew of the pregnant woman who was also shot. About three minutes later, several shots ring out.

The woman cried out in pain and ran from the vehicle, her cellphone camera jerking as she ran along a fence line and a total of 15 gunshots continued behind her.

According to police, Lavontay and the man were both hit in the head by bullets. The 12 year old's condition was unknown.

Levontay was the second child to die on Tuesday from gun violence in Chicago. The boy was shot in the buttocks and the man was shot in the right leg; both were in good condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Police suspect the shooting was gang related, WGN reports.

News images from the crime scene showed a maroon Oldsmobile Alero stopped in the alley where police said the victims were ambushed.

"We have very promising leads, we have video", Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. The shooting comes just a few days after two young girls were shot in the head.

"They shot us down!" the victim screamed to a woman, who could be heard asking, "Who?" Police said the officers thought the SUV matched the description of the vehicle wanted in the toddler's death.

"We have economic issues in this city that we have to address", he said.
