Los Angeles Lakers Trade Lou Williams and Get No Better

Williams will fit in well with Houston's up-tempo system.

According to the Vertical, the Rockets are giving the Lakers a first-round pick and wing player Corey Brewer in exchange for Williams. The 3 p.m. ET trade deadline leaves the Lakers in a bit of a hurry with just a couple days left to decide if they want to trade their top scorer. At their disposal, the Lakers have a late first-round selection and can use Brewer in a later package for yet another draft pick or to a team who's looking for a veteran presence. He's averaged 18.6 points per game this season and was already in contention for the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award. He's anchored a better-than-expected Lakers 2nd unit that would wither on the vine without his fast-twitch scoring instincts.

Ian Begley of ESPN.com reported Monday some members of Utah's front office are interested in Los Angeles Lakers guard Lou Williams. They were so confident in their ability to land a first-round pick for Williams that they offered that first-round pick in discussions for DeMarcus Cousins with Sacramento on Sunday.

And while the draft pick will help the Lakers' future, the Rockets just got deeper.

Wait out the Lakers, and Washington might be able to get Williams for a couple of second-rounders. Williams is in the second year of his three-year, $21 million deal. "Hopefully I can come and contribute (to) getting the team back to where they want to be, that's a victor".

In the end, there was nothing more that the Lakers could virtually ask for.

Last season Brewer played in all 82 games for the Rockets, starting 12, and averaging 7.2 points per game. Even if he does turn out to be marginally better than one of their young players, it's unlikely he'll ever see enough time to usurp a rotation spot from them.

With the acquisition of Williams, not only will opponents be unable to do so since Williams is a capable and solid shooter, but the Rockets can also survive with Harden on the bench a lot more.
