Matt Kuchar shines in first round at the Phoenix Open

Hideki Matsuyama curve ball

With one round left at the 2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Byeong-Hun An took sole possession of the lead with a 54-hole score of 16-under par.

Korean An and American Steele both birdied three of the last four holes on TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course to reach 10 under par in Arizona. Kuchar and Matsuyama were joined on 133 by Scotland's Martin Laird, who posted a 66 and South Korea's Kang Sung, who shot a 65.

"I drove the ball really well, which around here you have to do", Kuchar said. "I was just trying to hit shots and I wasn't doing a very good job", Woods said. The 47-ranked player in the world almost picked up his first PGA Tour title when he lost in a playoff at the Zurich past year, and he'll have another chance Sunday.

In his three appearances in this tournament, Matsuyama has finished tied for fourth, second and first.

Japan's Matsuyama has won on four of his last eight starts to climb to fifth in the world rankings and again impressed with six birdies in a flawless round. "Into the wind, uphill putts into the grain, I put a little more hinge on it going back to try to get a little more hit to it and it still didn't work".

An entered Saturday tied with Brendan Steele for the lead at 10 under par, but Steele fell off the pace with a one-under 70. It was his seventh birdie in a round that also included a hole-out for eagle at the 14th.

Laird's day got off to an inauspicious start with a bogey on the second hole.

Matsuyama, who beat Rickie Fowler past year in a playoff, had a bogey-free round in the morning.

The 25-year-old's progress slowed thereafter but he was never headed, recovering superbly to pick up a shot at the 17th after he had been disturbed off the tee by the boisterous crowds.
