Melania Trump refiles £121m libel claim against Daily Mail

Trump had previously launched a legal case against the news outlet in Maryland, but this was dismissed after a judge ruled that the case should be filed in the state of NY, where Mail Media is based.

Her lawyers conclude that the Mail's report, which spread across social media and blogs, "caused tremendous harm to [Melania Trump's] personal and professional reputation, for which she seeks compensatory and punitive damages of $150 million".

In her NY lawsuit, Trump's attorneys wrote that the publication of the story online had damaged her reputation and commercial prospects.

The first lady, who owns her own brand "Melania", said the claims had affected her ability to sell clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry, makeup, hair care and other items.

However, as a result of the "defamatory" statements made in the Mail Online article, Trump's brand suffered a hit financially and "major business opportunities that were otherwise available to her have been lost and/or substantially impacted", the lawsuit charged.

According to CNN, Harder and a White House spokeswoman issued identical statements denying that Trump intends to profit during her tenure as first lady.

The First Lady's lawsuit is against the Daily Mail, which published a story repeating allegations in a Slovenian magazine that Melania Trump once worked as an escort.

It is stated in the lawsuit that Melania Trump has a "once-in-a-lifetime" chance to expand her brand as a very famous person and gain multi-million dollar business partners.

At the heart of Trump's argument is the claim that she lost out on earnings she could have generated while first lady, because the Daily Mail published the false allegation that she once worked as an escort. The Mail Online retracted its story back in September, but no settlement was reached.

Harder is the same attorney who successfully represented Hulk Hogan in his defamation case against Gawker - which was bankrolled by Trump supporter and tech billionaire Peter Thiel. Harder said the retractions by Mail Online and Tarpley do not make a difference in the proceedings because reporters can not make defamatory statements by reporting rumours.

In a motion to dismiss, Tarpley's lawyers argued he immediately complied with requests for a retraction and apology, and that Trump brought the lawsuit "in bad faith".

Melania Trump, like her husband, seems to be ready to use the office of the presidency to make money.
