Mexico border wall to be finished in 2 yrs - DHS secretary

The governor of Texas met with the new Homeland Security chief on Wednesday for a tour of the U.S./Mexico border.

"The wall will be built where it's needed first, and then it will be filled in", Kelly told Fox News' Catherine Herridge and Matthew Dean in an exclusive interview Wednesday, his first as DHS secretary.

"There's a lot of people, particularly in Washington, that have opinions about this border, but the only opinion, in my view, that counts right now are the people that work this border", Kelly said.

"I'd really like to establish a relationship on this, on the other side".

"Any discussion about the protection of our south-west border involves discussion of physical barriers but also of technological sensors, things like that", he said.

"We will build it where it's needed first as identified by the men and women who work the border".

Kelly, who will oversee the wall's planning and construction, said that the Trump administration officials "already have the authority" under existing law to start the project.

General Kelly continued: "We're looking at the money aspect", acknowledging the the White House is working with Congress on a timetable for funds.

During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly said that he will build a wall along the US-Mexico border to control immigration.

In his interview with Fox News, Kelly also addressed the recent detentions at airports after Mr. Trump signed an executive order suspending the USA refugee program and banning travel to the US from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Abbott previously applauded President Donald Trump's proposed border wall.

After an global backlash caused by President Trump barring travel into the USA from seven majority-Muslim countries, General Kelly defended his boss. They briefed reporters and planned to head to Capitol Hill later Tuesday in an apparent effort to smooth relations after reports that lawmakers and other stakeholders were left out of the crafting of the executive order on toughened vetting at border entry points.

'Once he convinced me it was really Reince Priebus, he said would you come up and talk to Mr. Trump, he'd like to talk to you about a position in the administration, ' Kelly said. "I think that alone would act as a huge deterrent for people who are considering making the trip up", he said.
