MLB Hot Stove Trades: Braves acquire Brandon Phillips in deal with Reds

Per Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Rodriguez needs shoulder surgery for an injury sustained in a vehicle accident last month and will be out for several months, so the acquisition of Phillips could not be timed better. The Reds on Sunday announced the transaction was official, tweeting a statement from general manager Dick Williams.

Phillips was a staple of the Reds' infield for 11 seasons, earning three All-Star nods over that span as one of Cincinnati's most dependable players.

FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman later said the teams were hoping to finalize the trade by Monday. He is owed $14 million in 2017, the final year on his contract. That brings the cost of acquiring their new starting second baseman to two minor league depth pieces and $1 million. Although the 15-year veteran is getting up there in a age, Phillips still put up solid numbers last year as he posted a.291 average with 34 doubles, 11 homers and 64 RBI. He graduated from Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1999, per Yahoo!

Rosenthal said the Reds were looking to "increase the playing time of Jose Peraza, perhaps at the expense of longtime second baseman [Phillips]" before the deal. The Reds, who belatedly committed themselves to a rebuilding program in mid-2015, have repeatedly been stymied by attempts to move him due to a limited no-trade clause and then his 10-and-5 rights, which officially kicked in in August 2014.

In his prime, Phillips was a 30-30 threat who played plus defense at the cornerstone.

Phillips is a three-time All-Star and four-time gold glove award victor over the course of a 15-year career that began with the Indians back in 2002. Rodriguez, 31, signed a two-year deal with the Braves in November after a career year with the Pirates in which he batted.270 with 18 home runs in 300 at-bats. He reached the 30-30 plateau in the two statistics in a breakout 2007 campaign and was a force in the middle of the Reds lineup for three postseason squads. Hart gave veteran knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, also over 40 years old, a one-year, $7.5 million deal that also carries an option for $8 million.

Interestingly, about a month ago Phillips vetoed a deal that would have also sent him to Atlanta.

As for Phillips, he finally gets to play for his hometown team Braves.
