MSU Director of Athletics writes to Klages regarding suspension

MSU staff allegedly told the gymnastics team not to cooperate with authorities investigating sexual assault allegations against Dr. Larry Nassar

Nassar faces three first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in Ingham County and three federal charges related to possessing, obtaining or destroying child pornography images or videos. According to Michigan Live, Nassar sexually abused the former MSU gymnasts under the guise of medical treatment.

An Okemos attorney says members of the gymnastics community are organizing in an effort to support alleged victims of sexual attacks by Dr. Larry Nassar.

Along with serving as the team doctor for Michigan State, Nassar was also the team doctor for the U.S. gymnastics team for four Olympic games.

MSU gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages retired amid her suspension from MSU on February 14, MSU spokesperson Jason Cody confirmed via email.

White, the attorney for the gymnast who says Nassar sexually assaulted her during medical appointments, confirmed on Tuesday that it was Klages who spoke to his client's mother. But Klages downplayed their concerns at the time, they say, allegedly telling one girl that she "misunderstood" the treatments and that reporting those concerns would be "serious".

Adding that she can't comment on specific allegations because of legal advice, Klages "looks forward to being able to testify under oath and fully answer all questions that relate to any involvement she is alleged to have had in the situation".

But several of those plaintiffs say in court documents they they told Klages as far back as the late 1990's that Nassar abused them, and accuse her of failing to act on their complaints.

Klages is "extremely distressed" by the allegations and would never do anything to put athletes in "harm's way", her attorney, Shirlee Bobryk, said in a statement.

A plaintiff identified in the motion as Jane IMSU Doe, a participant in Spartan youth gymnastics, alleges that she refused treatment from Nassar, but he held her down and "performed the "procedure" against (her) will".

"The underlying accusations involving Ms. Klages have been a serious distraction to her professional responsibilities and detrimental to her overall well-being".

Klages is retiring "out of respect to the university and the gymnastics program". "Had she ever received any information to cast doubt on the appropriateness of that trust in Dr. Nassar, she would have reacted immediately to protect her gymnasts".

"Klages explained that she had known Nassar for years and could not imagine him doing anything questionable", the court filing states.
