Murkowski says she'll vote 'no' on DeVos

Education Secretary-designate Betsy DeVos testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Senate Democrats are within one vote of killing the nomination of Betsy DeVos to be Education Secretary after both Republican Senators Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski announced that they would vote no on DeVos.

It was reported yesterday that Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos had copied and pasted at least two of her answers to questions submitted to her by the Senate Education Committee.

Grayson said she's seen widespread opposition to DeVos in Greenville County.

"I was trying to get to yes, I couldn't", Murkowski said. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania questioned her on whether or not she would continue to seek justice for college campus assaults and further improve the laws in place that makes schools prosecute the accused.

The margin for DeVos narrowed significantly after Sen. DeVos has no professional experience in public schools, and she did not attend public schools herself or send her own children to them. Amount contributed to him directly by DeVos family: $53,400. "Unsurprisingly, DeVos wants to immediately reverse the Obama administration's hard-won protections for LGBTQ students".

The Post reported that this suggests DeVos' confirmation is "not assured". DeVos fails to meet these criteria.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is overseeing DeVos' confirmation hearing. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who chairs the committee, said the vote would occur over Democratic objections and complaints that her nomination had been rushed through.

And that's still likely.

Manchin's news release came about an hour after the end of a conference call with West Virginia reporters that sought to urge him to support DeVos.

"He had wonderful women working for him when he was governor of the state of Tennessee at a high level", he said.

Ms Collins and Ms Murkowski would be the first Republicans to break party ranks and vote against one of Mr Trump's cabinet selections. "I will not, I can not vote, to confirm her as our nation's next secretary of education". Lindsey Graham told the trustees he plans to support her when the vote goes to the full Senate.

The NEA represents 3 million members, making it the wealthiest and most influential union in the country.

Murkowski said DeVos has "much to learn" about the public school system and expressed concern over her strong support for "one side of the equation"; meaning charter and private schools.

Democrats - largely ignoring national test scores showing the continued downturn of performance by the nation's public school students - have portrayed DeVos as unqualified to run a department that oversees the nation's public schools, since she has largely been an advocate for charter schools and school vouchers.
