Puzder Withdraws From Labor Secretary Nomination

Why Trump and Netanyahu might keep Iran nuclear deal after all

"While we welcome the news that Andrew Puzder will not be our next Secretary of Labor, it is incumbent upon the President to nominate someone who will fully respect the laws created to protect American workers". That would have put the nomination in jeopardy, since Senate Republicans have only a 52-48 majority and Democrats are solidly opposed.

Senator Tim Scott of SC, who expressed reservations early on but said that he would be waiting until after the hearing to make a final judgment, said Wednesday morning, "Developing the workforce is most important to me".

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee was scheduled to consider Puzder's nomination Thursday in a hearing that had previously been delayed five times.

Puzder also faced other Democrat-led attacks over his business record and remarks about women and workers at his company, which owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr.

"Puzder was an outrageous pick for Labor Secretary and to head an agency responsible for promoting "the welfare of wage earners, job seekers and retirees".

Puzder had received criticism from the left for his opposition to raising the federal minimum wage and an Obama-era rule raising the overtime threshold.

One insider close to the confirmation process said the Puzder team was not given the resources necessary to rebut attacks against his record.

Murkowski and Maine's Republican Sen. "And I expect this will be the same for the next Labor Secretary nominee", former Labor Secretary Tom Perez said after news that Puzder had withdrawn his nomination.

PRESIDENT Donald Trump's top pick for Labour secretary has resigned after footage emerged of his ex-wife telling Oprah Winfrey he beat her.

"Mr. Puzder is a awful choice to head the agency charged with ensuring that women and men are treated fairly in the work place", she said. CNN reported that at least four but as many as 12 Senate Republicans planned to vote against him.

Even the conservative National Review came out against Puzder Wednesday for his support for expanding legal immigration. HHS said it's following the Trump administration's order to freeze all regulatory actions. But he told reporters Wednesday that he wanted to know more about why Puzder employed an undocumented housekeeper and how he paid her. Tillis cited the same concerns. The week before his withdrawal, he admitted to employing an illegal immigrant household worker and not paying taxes for that worker.
