Roger Goodell: NFL against casino interests owning franchises

Roger Goodell

San Diego is reportedly interested in bringing the Oakland Raiders to town if the team can not complete a deal to move to Las Vegas.

The Raiders and Houston Texans met earlier this season in a "Monday Night Football" game in Mexico City televised by ESPN.

The game will be considered a road game for New England, so they will not lose a home game. The Raiders played the Texans in Mexico City in 2016.

The NFL released an announcement shortly after, saying the date and time of the game will be determined in conjunction with the release of the 2017 NFL schedule this spring.

The NFL says Mexico City will host a regular-season game between the Raiders and the New England Patriots in 2017. Also, a group led by Raiders legend Ronnie Lott is working to keep the team in the East Bay.

"We had a great experience a year ago", Goodell said.

This actually won't be the Patriots' first trip to Mexico City.

"We've always said we're going to maintain the integrity of our game by maintaining separation between sports gambling and our game", Goodell said. Back in 1998, they traveled there for an exhibition game. We have had plenty of success in global games and I attribute that to our tremendous fan support in those venues.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league was pleased with the results of last year's Mexico City trip and meant to make a multi-year commitment to playing there. Seventy-five percent of the league's 32 owners, including Davis, must vote in favor of the proposal for the Raiders to begin play in Las Vegas, possibly in 2018. "I look forward to meeting some of our fantastic fans and enjoying the food and culture there in the fall".
