'Row the Boat' trademark now belongs to PJ Fleck, report says

Head Coach PJ Fleck with the

The coach has continued to use the phrase at his new school, per Olsen, despite the fact that Western Michigan previously owned its rights.

"I plan on bringing it with", he said on January 6.

The phrase had been trademarked by Fleck's former employer, Western Michigan, but ESPN reports WMU has agreed to transfer it to the coach's agent, Bryan Harlan.

Since his hire, Fleck has been questioned about the future of the "Row The Boat", officially licensed by WMU while he was there. "The motivational phrase, as Fleck has noted personally, is one that is highly personal and grew out of the way his family coped with the loss of his infant son".

The University will retain the right to use "Row the Boat" in its football materials and displays, recognizing and celebrating Fleck's tenure at WMU and the teams he coached. According to the official press release issued by Western Michigan Fleck will give Western Michigan at yearly payments of $10,000 to support a scholarship for a football player in exchange for the transferring of the trademark. The "Fleck Family Football Scholarship" will be available in the fall of this year. That should allow Fleck to use it in his new job at Minnesota.

"Under terms of the agreement, Fleck, now the head football coach at Minnesota, will continue to fund a $50,000 gift he and his wife, Heather, committed to Western Michigan past year". Like I said before, we need everybody rowing in the same direction, same speed, same efficiency. Fleck was named head coach in 2012. The gift was made as part of a larger capital campaign drive to renovate the Waldo Stadium coaches offices as part of stadium renovations completed in preparation for the Broncos' 2016 season.
