Russian Runner Banned, Loses London Gold For Doping

In addition to her victory at London 2012, Savinova-Farnosova won gold at the 2010 European Championship in Barcelona and at the 2011 worlds in Daegu, though she could only manage silver two years later in the Russian capital.

The 31-year-old's results from July 2010 and August 2013 have been annulled, meaning she also loses her 2011 world title, 2013 world silver medal and 2010 European gold.

The decision opens the way for Caster Semenya of South Africa, who finished second in that London race, to become a two-time Olympic champion.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had initially called for Savinova to be banned for life after she was named as one of five Russian athletes implicated in the first Independent Commission report.

For this reason, the court found her guilty of violating the rules of the International Association of Athletics Federation, relating to the use of prohibited substances or methods by an athlete.

She has not raced since 2013 after being suspended following an investigation.

The IAAF said it would no comment on the case as Savinova still has 45 days to decide whether to make an appeal.

Both athletes could now have their medals upgraded.

"The CAS acted as first instance decision-making authority for this matter, substituting for RusAF, which was suspended at the time the matter was ready to be adjudicated (and which remains suspended)", the global sports arbitration body added in explaining its jurisdiction over the matter.

The Iaaf has said Russian Federation will not be allowed to compete at the world championships in London this year because there are still major problems in its anti-doping system.
