Texas Mayor Jess Herbst Comes Out As Transgender

Mayor Jess Herbst of New Hope Texas recently publicly announced she is transgender

In an open letter posted January 23 on the town website, she writes, "As your mayor I must tell you about something that has been with me since my earliest memories".

Herbst says her transition started two years ago, with the support of her wife and daughters.

"I have received emails congratulating me, calling me fearless and even one expressing pride in living in a town with a mayor like me", Herbst said. She has served the city since 2003, also as alderman and road commissioner - first elected as Jeff Herbst.

The Texas Observer reported that Herbst couldn't be reached for comment.

"As your Mayor I must tell you about something that has been with me since my earliest memories", she wrote. During the election cycle, the mayor suffered a heart attack and died days before the election, but still won, leaving the town without a mayor.

This isn't Herbst's first time coming out.

Herbst commended the progress transgender people had made in recent years, naming both Olympic gold medallist Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox from series Orange is the new Black.

Ms Herbst was appointed mayor following the death of her predecessor.

"In the role he plays in the community, I'm not sure how that would be a positive thing."
"I live my life as a female now, and I will be performing my duties to the town as such", she wrote. She is serving as mayor during a time when the state is debating anti-transgender "bathroom bills", similar to the law enacted in North Carolina. The said bill is trying to make it a requirement for people to use the bathroom matching their "biological sex" while in government buildings. Ugh.

We're definitely rooting for Jess and wish her a lengthy career in politics.
