Trump attacks McCain over criticism of outcome of Yemen raid

The US military released five brief video clips Friday Feb 3 2017 showing for the first time some of the information seized in Sunday's counterterrorism raid against al Qaeda in Yemen

President Trump has fired up his feud with one of the adults in Washington, D.C., tweeting that Sen.

President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized Sen.

Later, Spicer doubled down, accusing Senator John McCain (and other critics of the raid) of defaming the dead Navy SEAL when he suggested the raid had been something less than a towering success.

That prompted White House spokesman Sean Spicer to call out McCain, saying Wednesday that anyone critical of the raid "does disservice to the life of Chief Ryan Owens" - which, of course, isn't true, either. "And while numerous objectives of the recent raid in Yemen were met, I would not describe any operation that results in the loss of American life as a success", McCain said in a statement.

Going back to July 2015, Trump sparked a political firestorm by blasting McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War, and his military service.

If the Yemen raid is the new face of "winning" under Trump, America may yet long for the days of "losing" under previous presidents.

The president lambasted the Republican veteran for talking about the Navy SEAL Team 6 mission, saying it "only emboldens the enemy".

The January raid involved the first military death under President Donald Trump and resulted in a number of civilian casualties, including the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born al Qaeda leader killed under President Barack Obama.

"He's not a war hero", Trump said in a TV interview. He also said a Yemeni call for a halt to US special operations is "not true". "Just look at the mess our country is in - bogged down in conflict all over the place". The Arizona lawmaker has labeled the mission a "failure" in the wake of heavy civilian causalities, the target not being taken down and Yemen withdrawing permission to American special operations to carry out missions there.

"The action that was taken in Yemen was a huge success", Spicer told reporters.

".Ryan died on a winning mission ( according to General Mattis), not a "failure".

Trump also is wrong on the facts.

McCain responded by with a statement that when he was a POW in North Vietnam, there was a failed attempt to rescue him and others - and that the troops who'd risked their lives to save him were "heroes" even though "the mission failed".

McCain stepped in earlier this month after a contentious phonecall to Australia's Prime Minister which Trump abruptly ended, and after which he tweeted an attack on the "illegal immigrants" that the USA has agreed to take under an agreement with the Aussies.

"When you lose a $75 million airplane and, more importantly, an American life is lost ..."
