Trump government detained 680 immigrants in raids last week

Protestors against deportation and immigration raids close off a section of Aliso Street in downtown L.A. on Feb. 9 2017

Federal authorities arrested more than 680 undocumented immigrants in a series of raids across the U.S. last week, sparking fears of a nationwide crackdown under the Trump administration.

"We're actually taking people that are criminals, very, very, hardened criminals in some cases with a tremendous track record of abuse and problems", Trump said. WGN reports a small group of demonstrators gathered at ICE headquarters in the Loop Monday to protest the arrest of undocumented immigrants. "As it is part of a criminal investigation pending federal prosecution, we can not release further details".

President Donald Trump issued an executive order January 25 directing agencies to prioritize the removal of aliens who have been charged or convicted with crimes or who pose a risk to public safety or national security. The same was the case in NY and San Antonio, with 61 of the 92 individuals arrested having prior criminal convictions.

David Marin, head of ICE's removal operations in Los Angeles, told reporters that the operations - which saw 160 people swept up in the California metropolis - were planned prior to Trump's January swearing-in and were comparable to past actions.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly Monday defended recent "targeted enforcement operations" by federal authorities in areas including Riverside County that triggered mass-deportation fears in some immigrant communities, saying the raids were aimed at criminals and people who violated immigration laws. "People are going to be very, very happy".

We believe that those who are in our country illegally and have criminal convictions should be expelled.

The crackdown comes as Mr Trump's executive order restricting immigration from seven countries remains on hold after the ninth circuit court of appeal last week upheld the ban's suspension.

But the arrests come amid concerns that the Trump administration will crack down even harder on immigrants living in the country illegally.

Elmiron says they are telling families to create plans for their children in the event they are picked up by immigration officials.

Did President Donald Trump initiate a "crackdown" on undocumented immigrants over the past week, or are the actions of US immigration officers just routine enforcement?

Over the past week, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, has carried out a series of raids around the country resulting in hundreds of arrests of non-legal immigrants.

A three-state targeted enforcement operation led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations arrested 190 people, including 19 in SC, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
