United States job market is off to a strong start in 2017

The economy added 227,000 new jobs in January, according to the first monthly jobs report released under President Donald Trump by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Friday.

Despite the stronger than expected job growth, the unemployment rate inched up to 4.8% in January from 4.7% in December amid an increase in the size of the labor force.

In the first jobs report since Trump's inauguration, nonfarm payrolls grew by 227,000 jobs in January, as Spicer noted, surpassing economists' expectations.

US job growth likely accelerated in January, with wages expected to have increased steadily, suggesting a strong start for the Trump administration as it seeks to boost the economy and employment.

Employment in other major industries, including manufacturing, transportation, information, and government, showed little change since December.

States where hospital employment has leapt off the gurney and skipped down the hallway by more than +4.0% y/y have been: South Dakota, +5.8%; SC and OR, +4.9%; Montana and Washington, +4.7%; Hawaii, +4.5%; Nevada, +4.3%; and IN, +4.2%. Wage growth disappointed, however, and the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 4.8%.

All sectors of the economy are expected to have added jobs in January. The ADP National Employment Report on Wednesday showed that private employers added 246,000 jobs last month, up from 151,000 in December. According to the Wall Street Journal, a rising unemployment rate could "suggest [that] workers who dropped out of the labor force are returning and that the labor market has yet to reach full strength".

When people haven't been looking for work - often because they feel discouraged by long periods of unemployment - they're not included in the BLS' estimates.

The report tracks non-farm payroll in the US. Numerous new jobs were in construction and retail shops. "It's too soon to say what impact the Trump administration has had on the job market".

As an indication that the dark clouds in the resource sector may finally be dispersing, the not seasonally adjusted (NSA) unemployment rate in "mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction" improved to 6.8% in January from 8.1% 12 months prior. Another 32,000 jobs were added in the financial services sector, notably among real estate and insurance agents. Even before he took office, the markets knew he would deliver on that promise. Jed Kolko, the chief economist at jobs search site Indeed, points out that the share of manufacturing jobs in the economy reached a new all-time low of 8.5%-manufacturing accounted for more than 30% of all jobs in the 1950s.
