Verizon Joins the Unlimited Data War of 2017

Verizon announces new unlimited data plan

Verizon's lost their network advantage and had to cave-in on unlimited data.

On Monday, wireless giant Verizon VZannounced its return to unlimited data, and will offer its subscribers the coveted plan after the company joined its rivals several years ago in leaving behind these types of data plans. Customers will get HD quality video streaming and up to 10GB of high-speed Mobile Hotspot data per month, so they can "tether" a laptop or other device to access the Internet.

Verizon's latest data play follows last week's report from wireless service tracker OpenSignal indicating that its LTE network is now essentially tied in speed and coverage with T-Mobile's. Lines three through four are free.

Pricing for Verizon's unlimited data plan is reasonable, starting at $80 per month, including unlimited talk and text.

Your move, Verizon. Your move.

T-Mobile, which took aim at Verizon in a series of Super Bowl commercials, starts its unlimited plan at $70 a month, going up to $160 for four lines. The deal provides data, talk, and text for $50 per month for one line, or $90 per month for two lines. That study found the Un-carrier's LTE network is just as fast as Verizon's and with almost equal coverage, and T-Mobile customers get an LTE signal about as often as Verizon customers.

As with any unlimited plan, there are a few caveats.

AT&T: Unlimited data is only offered to to grandfathered customers who had it before they dropped the plans and customers who bundle it with DirecTV. However, Verizon said that it doesn't expect to do that often. A connected smartwatch can be added for just $5 per month.

A number of analysts predicted that Verizon would continue to stay away from unlimited data plans due to having less available spectrum per each subscriber than its smaller competitors. Customers who surpass 22GB for the month will witness speed bumps in their connection during busy times to prevent network congestion. It has been trying to push longtime customers off its old unlimited plans, which it killed in 2012, with rate hikes.
