Winter storm could drop a foot of snow on Northeast US

In fact, much of the Northeast will see between six and 12 inches of snow-and airlines, anticipating the deluge of the white stuff, are already responding.

By Thursday morning, 9 inches of snow had fallen at La Guardia Airport, while parts of New Jersey had up to 6.5 inches of snow.

All flights at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport were halted on Thursday morning due to the storm's intensity.

Some places were poised to experience an atmospheric yo-yo: Philadelphia and NY hit 60 degrees on Wednesday, were expecting at least a half-foot of snow on Thursday and were bracing for bitter cold temperatures Thursday night.

"As Mother Nature once again tests the resilience and strength of this state, I urge New Yorkers to plan ahead, stay informed, and above all, stay safe", Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Most airlines will call or email you to notify if you have a flight canceled, but you can also check out flight status online at the airport's website.

More than 60 million people will be dealing with the wintry weather, CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.

NY said it would reopen its school system Friday.

The rest of the state was under a winter storm warning, effective until 8 p.m.

Winter storm warnings are in effect, stretching from Pennsylvania through parts of New York, New Jersey and New England. There were windy conditions at the time but no wind restrictions that applied to the truck, and authorities have not determined a cause of the accident, a Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel official said. Some areas received 10 inches of snow or more and at least one death has been reported. Check the latest Futurecast to see when the snow will start in your area. The weather service issued a blizzard warning for some coastal areas.

Authorities are pleading with people to stay off the roads and warned of worsening conditions. Boston and other areas in MA are now expected to get 12 to 18 inches of snow over the course of the day.

The storm could pack an impressive punch of inches-per-hour with low visibility as thick snow falls. Schools and government offices are closed and the Rhode Island General Assembly canceled its session on Thursday, reports WPRI.
