Man swallowed whole by python

Concerned friends and relatives found the giant python sprawled out in Akbar's own back garden the next evening- and feared he had been suffocated and swallowed

Villagers from an island in west Sulawesi, Indonesia were shocked when they discovered the dead body of a missing man inside a stomach of a seven-meter python after cutting the snake open.

Akbar Salubiro, from the village of West Sulawesi, disappeared Sunday on his way to harvest palm oil.

Junaidi said Wednesday the search led villagers to scattered palm oil, a picking tool, a boot, and a 23-foot reticulated python.

A graphic video of the incident was shared on YouTube by Tribun Timur - but be warned, it's extremely disturbing. Police said they feared the snake had swallowed the 25-year-old whole.

"A resident cut open the belly of the snake and Akbar was lifeless".

Reportedly, the python was cut open and the man's body was found.

According to the Associated Press, Junaedi said Akbar's absence wasn't noticed until Monday because his wife was visiting her parents in another province. They are mainly found in Indonesia and certain parts of Southeast Asia.

Even though most pythons have fairly large teeth, they only use them to hold the prey and to swallow.

While they normally avoid human settlements, this particular python may have been attracted to the palm fruit plantation because of the opportunity to hunt other animals attracted to the area. They choke their victims to death before swallowing them whole.

So while reticulated pythons - the longest snakes in the world - have attacked humans very occasionally in the past, experts have long questioned whether they could ingest an adult man.

The UK's Metro newspaper posted a video of the villagers recovering the body from the python's stomach.
