Nunes, Schiff meet to try to get Russia investigation back on track

Michael Flynn is Donald Trump's national security adviser

Devin Nunes (R-CA) leaves the House floor on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S. March 29, 2017.

"The intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in our elections - paired with mounting evidence of connections between the Trump administration and Putin's government - demands a thorough and nonpartisan investigation", said Takano, who serves on House committees pertaining to education and the workforce, space, science and technology and veterans affairs.

Several current American officials identified the White House officials as Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence at the National Security Council, and Michael Ellis, a lawyer who works on national security issues at the White House Counsel's Office and formerly worked on the staff of the House Intelligence Committee.

In the letter, White House Counsel Don McGhan wrote the material related to whether "information collected on United States persons was mishandled and leaked".

"This isn't a partisan criticism, you know you've got Lindsey Graham and John McCain and others saying, 'I've never seen anything quite like this, ' " Rep. Jim Himes, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said Wednesday on CNN's "New Day". Nunes has repeatedly insisted that the events of the past week were not part of a coordinated effort between himself and the White House.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating signs of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election with a hearing today.

Schiff said he and Nunes have agreed to go forward with a closed hearing with FBI Director James Comey and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers. Then, Spicer pivoted to a line he's used already this week, lecturing Garett on the press' "obsession" with the process by which Nunes has gotten his information. Schiff also said he's asked the White House if the materials he's been invited to view are the same as the intelligence viewed by Nunes last week. He's become a controversial figure in intelligence circles, but Trump chose to keep him on over the objections of the CIA, according to the officials.

The New York Times reported that two White House officials - including an aide whose job was recently saved by President Donald Trump - secretly helped Nunes examine intelligence information last week. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the internal matter.

A spokesman for Ryan later said the speaker was not aware of Nunes' source and continues to have "full confidence" in the congressman's ability to run the Russian Federation investigation.
